In September last year,Amazon announced several new Kindle Fire tablets,and launched the standard Fire and the Fire HD in the UK for the first time. However, the most interesting of Amazon’s new tablets, the Fire HD 8.9 was only given a US release at the time.
Amazon has now seen the error of its ways and announced the availability of theFire HD 8.9for the UK, and it should be available to buy as you read this. As the name suggests, the tablet has an 8.9-inch display, plus it has an impressive 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, putting it in the same territory as the Nexus 10 and theAppleiPad. It’s powered by a Texas Instruments OMAP processor with a clock speed of 1.5GHz, plus it has Amazon’s much-vaunted dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity, and a front-facing video call camera.
Like other Kindle Fire tablets, the Fire HD 8.9 uses a modified version of Android, and provides access to all Amazon’s digital content – although not everything is available here in the UK – plus Amazon’s Android application store. You can choose between one with 16GB or 32GB of storage, and they’re priced at £229 and £259 respectively. However, if you don’t want Amazon’s “special offers” (which means adverts to you and me), you need to add another £10 to both of those prices.
The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 will also go on sale in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Japan. None will be getting the still US-only 4G LTE version, and its price in America has been dropped to $269 for the basic model, which equates to about £180 – a saving of £50 over our price. Thanks Amazon.
